Heather Texle is an American science fiction author who writes action-driven sci-fi crime novels featuring high-stakes investigations, spacefaring adventure, and complex characters.

Many authors talk about how they started telling stories when they were little kids. That wasn’t me. I grew up an avid reader of science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, and thrillers—anything that let me solve a crime or fight a dragon from the safety of my couch. But I never thought of myself as someone who could actually write a book. I assumed that since my first novel hadn’t been penned in periwinkle crayon at the ripe old age of six, I’d somehow missed my chance to become a writer.

Then, in my early thirties, I attended a book signing for one of my favorite authors. She shared her writing journey and mentioned she hadn’t started until her late twenties. That stuck with me.

Maybe there wasn’t a deadline on becoming an author after all.

In the two weeks that followed, a story idea formed and refused to leave me alone. I wrote it down—mostly to prove to myself that it wouldn’t work. But it did. One chapter became two. I read every craft book I could get my hands on, attended writing conferences, and honed my skills. Eventually, I had a completed manuscript.

What I discovered is that starting later wasn’t a disadvantage—it was fuel. By then I’d gone to college, studied martial arts, moved across states, lived in small towns and big cities, made friends, lost friends, worked, married, traveled, and lived a full life. All of it became material for my stories.

Today, I write fast-paced, action-driven science fiction and sci-fi crime novels about people trying to do the right thing in complicated futures. Starting later in life means I bring real-world experience to the page, and that perspective shapes the choices my characters face. There are spaceships, investigations, and plenty of high-stakes action, but at the heart of each story are people navigating consequences, responsibility, and second chances. I’m especially drawn to competent, flawed characters who don’t always get it right the first time but keep showing up anyway.
